Idol watch: It's Dolly Parton week for LDS 'Idols'

Published: Wednesday, April 2 2008 1:27 p.m. MDT

Last night's performance brought cheers for David Archuleta but jeers for Brooke White (at least from dour judge Simon Cowell), as the two LDS finalists on Fox-TV's "American Idol" performed songs written by Dolly Parton.Archuleta's choice of music is a classic song about Parton's home town, called "Smoky Mountain Memories." His rendition nearly brought tears to Parton's eyes as she visited with Archuleta before the performance. All three judges liked it, and of course the audience liked it (David is clearly an audience favorite). Stay tuned for tomorrow's eliminations to see if it is enough to keep Archuleta in the running. While Archuleta excelled, White rushed as she fumbled with tone in last night's performance. However she managed to pick a great song when she performed Parton's "Jolene."Judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson said White has a perfect voice for this kind of song and music, but Cowell said she lacked emotion, saying she "busked"  (a British term referring to street performers and entertainers) her way through the song. Will Jackson and Abdul's vote of confidence be enough to keep White around for another week? Check back tomorrow to find out if  Archuleta and White make it into tonight's top eight finalists. To watch the performances (as well as the meetings White and Archuleta had with Parton), brought to you by YouTube.com, click here for Archuleta, and here to watch White.
