CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The trial of a man accused of killing one Mormon missionary and wounding another who was from Colorado is scheduled to begin Monday in Chesapeake.
James Boughton Jr. is charged with first-degree murder, malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding and three firearms violations.
Missionaries Morgan W. Young and Joshua Heidbrink were shot while knocking on doors in Chesapeake in January 2006.
Young, of Bountiful, Utah, died of his injuries. Heidbrink, of Greeley, Colo., who was shot in the clavicle, recovered from the shooting.
Boughton is being held in jail.
Heidbrink said during court testimony that he and Young were going door-to-door when they heard a shot and saw a man running toward them. Heidbrink said the man shot him and then Young, who was on his knees looking up at the shooter. Heidbrink said he heard a pop and saw Young fall forward.
Boughton is also accused in the attempted malicious wounding of a third man, Gregory L. Banks, Jr., who testified that a man jumped him from behind at his driveway shortly before the missionaries were shot. Banks said that the shooter aimed at his face and fired but missed and Banks pretended to be dead when he fell to the ground.
