Shot put, pole vault advances; discus doesn't qualify

Several Mormon Olympians competed Saturday at the Beijing Olympics. More results will be posted as they become available.

WOMEN'S SHOT PUT

Jill Camarena of Tucson, Ariz., qualified in the women's shot put qualifying round. The athletes were required to throw the shot put at least 18.45 meters or be in the top 12 performers. She threw 18.15 meters on her first try, 18.32 meters on her second try and qualified on her third try with 18.51 meters — the best she has done this season. Final results for this qualifying round ranked her in 12th place. Valerie Vili of New Zealand led the round with a throw of 19.73 meters.

MEN'S 3,000-METER STEEPLECHASE

Josh McAdams of Orem, Utah, did not qualify for the next round in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. He ran in the third heat of qualifying round 1, coming in ninth place in that heat with a time of

8:33.26. Overall, he came in 26th place out of 37 runners. Yakob Jarso of Ethiopia came in first with a time of 8:16:88. WOMEN'S POLE VAULT

April Steiner-Bennett of Mesa, Ariz., tied for third in the women's pole vault qualifying round — Group A with a height of 4.50 meters. Elena Isinbaeva of Russia placed first at 4.60 meters, with Shuying Gao of China and Svetlana Feofanova of Russia also at 4.50.

MEN'S DISCUS THROW

Niklas Arrhenius of Stockholm, Sweden, failed to qualify as he placed 15th in the qualifying round — Group B. He threw 58.22 meters; to qualify to move on, athletes had to throw 64.50 meters or finish in the top 12.Arrhenius, a Utah County native, won an NCAA individual championship while competing at BYU. He has dual citizenship because his father is Swedish.
