The LDS Church announced Thursday that more than 140 million copies of the Book of Mormon have been distributed since its publication in 1830.Joseph Smith, who founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 19th century, said he translated the book from a set of gold plates given to him by an angel of God. The church considers the book to be one of its foundational scriptures.
More than 1 million LDS missionaries have distributed the book worldwide, the church statement said, noting the book is currently available in 107 languages.
