MOUNT OLYMPUS — People playing with fireworks sparked a blaze on Mount Olympus late Wednesday night, fire officials said.
The fire started around 11 p.m. near the Mount Olympus Trail above Wasatch Boulevard and about 5400 South.
Two witnesses reported seeing seven people run down the trail after fireworks went off. They say the people jumped into two vehicles and drove away. Firefighters found fireworks near the area where the fire started.
The blaze, which burned about 7 acres, was contained Thursday. No one was injured and no homes were threatened by the fire.
Unified Fire Authority Assistant Chief Mike Watson said the blaze was in an area where it's illegal to use fireworks. If the people responsible for starting the fire are found, they could be responsible for the cost of putting the blaze out, he said.
