SALT LAKE CITY — Two men have been charged in connection with a May 10 shooting in a West Valley City grocery store parking lot following an alleged drug deal.

Valentin “Primo” Aguilar Hernandez, 27, and Fernando Martinez Trejo, 32, both of West Valley City, both were charged Tuesday with attempted murder.

According to court documents, a drug deal took place in the parking lot of WinCo at 2572 S. 5600 West around 3 p.m. Shortly afterward, several other people drove up with guns and ordered the shooting victim, Shaun Leonard, and another man, John Sinapi, into one of the vehicles.

Instead, the two ran to Sinapi’s vehicle. Leonard later told police he ran toward Sinapi’s vehicle, heard several gunshots, saw a bullet hole in the vehicle’s glass, felt his head and realized he had been shot.

Leonard also said he knew the man who shot him as “Primo,” according to charging documents. The two victims also identified Hernandez and Martinez in separate police lineups.

When West Valley City police arrived at the scene, several witnesses said they had seen a man holding an “AK-47 type rifle” and had heard four to five gunshots. Witnesses also said that a white truck, a Honda Civic and a Chevrolet TrailBlazer then left the parking lot and headed west onto Parkway Boulevard.

Leonard later went to University Hospital in Salt Lake City to get treatment for a gunshot wound to his head. He had a bullet lodged between his skull and skin that later popped out, according to court documents. Sinapi was found after the incident at a Salt Lake City tattoo shop.

Police found two Remington Peters .380 auto shell casings at the scene.

Hernandez and Trejo both have been charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony. Trejo also has been charged with possession of a controlled substance.
