Jordan Chatman, son of legendary Cougar, receiving local attention

PORTLAND, Ore. — Most long-time BYU fans have fond memories of Jeff Chatman, who starred for the Cougars during the mid-'80s. Now his son, Jordan Chatman, may be following in his father’s footsteps.

While he likes BYU a lot, it's not his only option.

“I have three offers now, and a lot of other schools looking at me,” said Jordan Chatman. “I’ve spent a good amount of time looking at each school and want to make the best decision for me.”

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound point guard currently holds offers from BYU, Utah State and Portland. There's increasing interest from programs such as Harvard, Stanford, Oregon State and most recently Utah.

A few weeks ago, Chatman took an unofficial visit to the Utah campus and came back impressed.

“Coach Krystkowiak is an NBA guy, with NBA playing experience and coaching experience, so I really like that,” he said. “It’s real exciting that they’ll be playing in the Pac-12, so it’s definitely something I’ll consider if they come forward with an offer.”

Utah has indicated that an offer could be coming after coaches see him play in person.

Chatman is currently playing AAU ball, which has taken him to places such as Virginia, Indiana, Texas and Louisiana this summer. He hails from Union High, just outside of Portland, and has joined with other top Northwest prospects in forming quite a formidable team.

“We’re the best team out of the Northwest, with the guys we have on our team,” he said. “Most of my teammates have scholarship offers from Division I programs, and it’s been a lot of fun.”

While playing for his AAU team, he’s been able to show his up-tempo style, which has led many schools to show interest in him.

The first school to show him interest was Utah State, who came forward with his first offer.

“I’ve been up there. I was actually up there when they played BYU and they beat them,” said Chatman. “The atmosphere was great, and I love Coach Morrill. Utah State is a school that goes to the NCAA tournament every year, and they win. I also love the style of ball that they play.”

Regarding Portland and its interest, he likes that the university is close to home, among other factors.
