Three games into the MLS season Real Salt Lake is sitting on a maximum nine points and is the only team in the league without a loss.
The quick start is exactly what the club needed in its bid to unseat Los Angeles as the Supporters Shield winner for the best regular season record. A year ago it took RSL seven games to reach nine points as a 3-0 home victory over Philadelphia lifted it into a fourth-place tie in the Western Conference with 10 points.
The Galaxy were already sitting on 22 points that same weekend, and the gap ultimately proved too big to overcome.
This year RSL is taking care of business early, and the way it dismantled New England on the road 2-0 on Saturday night was once again the talk of the league.
@GrantWahl of Sports Illustrated tweeted out, "Salt Lake does something impressive nearly every week. Wins 2-0 with mostly 2nd-stringers at New England. RSL only perfect team in MLS."
In fact, only starters Will Johnson and Robbie Russell were in the line-up when the team faced Saprissa in Costa Rica just a few nights earlier.
For Kyle Reynish, Rauwshan McKenzie, Jean Alexandre, Collen Warner and Arturo Alvarez the start was their first of the season in any competition.
When the "B Team" line-up was revealed shortly before kickoff Saturday night, ESPN's @TaylorTwellman posted on his Twitter account "wow the New England Revolution are given a GREAT opportunity with Real Salt Lake playing their reserve squad ... will they take advantage of it?"
The answer was an emphatic no.
RSL was the better team throughout the night, and the team's supporters were obviously giddy with excitement throughout the match and afterward.
Shortly after halftime, RSL supporter @utecabron tweeted out, "This team is fun to watch. The passing and spacing is incredible. Our Team is Deep."
When Paulo Jr. buried a breakaway to put RSL ahead 2-0 early in the second half, @rslsoapbox said, "Folks, welcome to the world that RSL lives in, yes RSL now up 2-0 as Paulo Jr. gets his second MLS goal."
@beanmace said, "RSL v New England is the soccer equivalent of BYU v Wyoming football."
"Again folks, and those of you who haven't followed this from the start it is hard to understand, but 9 pts in the first 3 matches – Amazing!" tweeted out @MLSConvert.
It's too bad nobody was there to watch, as @kylejmccarthy pointed out, "Attendance tonight at Gillette Stadium: 7,970. Ugh."
Would a new stadium even help this troubled franchise? Gotta put the Revolution in the same category as Dallas and Colorado as teams with the least amount of fan support.
That clearly isn't a problem in Utah, where the state is buzzing with RSL fever – even Jazz fans.
@JazzHoops tweeted out, "Jazz fans, I'm telling you ... Give RSL a chance. For as frustrating as this seasons been, it's been nice to have RSL in SLC to represent."
It's particularly fun for Real Salt Lake supporters as 14 players on the team are regular posters on Twitter, and they love to interact with their fans.
Captain @KyleBeckerman, who entered Saturday's match as a second-half substitute, summed up the victory on his Twitter account, "3 points and a shutout. boys stepped up tonight big time. On to the next one, On to the next one!!!"
After upping its MLS regular season unbeaten streak to 17 straight, two shy of tying the MLS record, RSL will turn its attention to hosting rival Colorado this Wednesday.
@GrantWahl said there's an interesting side story to the match, "Salt Lake-Colorado game this Wed. Big owner contrast: Checketts has players to house, nows wives' names; Kroenke barely knows top players."
