The Aggies basketball team, made up of fourth graders from Cache Valley and Tremonton, won the state AAU basketball championship Saturday at Bingham High School in Salt Lake City by defeating the Salt Lake Slam, 51-46, in the closest of the six games the Aggies won while averaging 63 points per game while only allowing 25 per contest.
Slam coach Pace Mannion had his team playing well in the first half of the title game, taking a 24-20 lead into intermission. But coaches Chris Jones and Chet Jeppsen made adjustments and the Aggies eventually took a 10-point lead with just under two minutes left before the Slam made a furious comeback.
Rylan Jones paced the Aggies with 19 points and Tyson Madson added 15, while Carter Berish and Mason Falslev each pitched in eight points. Timely foul shooting and solid defense were keys to the game and down the stretch as the Aggies held on for the win.
The Aggies also won the Top of Utah Tournament in fourth and fifth grades, and won the fifth-grade Ogden Competitive League twice. They are now preparing to defend their title at the National Easter Showcase Tournament in Las Vegas in April.
