SALT LAKE CITY — A House committee unanimously approved a resolution Monday that would allow the Rio Grande Depot to be used for farmers' and other public markets.
HJR34 would allow the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management to lease the historic railroad depot as a venue for local artists and artisans to sell their wares year-round.
David Litvack, D-Salt Lake, said the depot could be used as an extension to the popular farmers' market held at nearby Pioneer Park during the warmer months.
Jason Mathis, executive director of Downtown Alliance, the nonprofit that sponsors the farmers market, said the depot could be a great spot to hold public markets due to its close proximity to Gateway Mall and the Intermodal transit hub.
"It makes sense in a lot of different ways," he said.
The bill now moves to the House for its consideration.
