BYU basketball: Report card vs. SDSU

BYU got enormous play after enormous play from every single guy that stepped on the court, and the seventh-ranked Cougars took down No. 4 San Diego State, 80-67, in what was billed as the biggest game in the history of the Mountain West Conference. Here's how BYU's fantastic players graded over 40 minutes inside Viejas Arena:

STARTERS

Jimmer Fredette: BYU's Player of the Year candidate made plays all over the place for the Cougars. Despite not getting many calls — he had only six free-throw attempts — Fredette finished with 25 points and nine assists on the offensive end. He had two steals defensively. Fredette struggled over the middle portion of the game — perhaps that could be attributed to the way the game was called — but he kept his composure and got back on track over the second part of the second half. Grade: A.

Charles Abouo: It is hard to overstate just how good Fredette's pal was in the second half. Abouo scored eight crucial points down the stretch to allow BYU to pull away, and the junior forward finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. It was just a phenomenal performance. Grade: A+.

Jackson Emery: He didn't shoot extraordinarily well — though he did make a huge 3 in the second half — but he was his usual Mr. Everything self for the Cougars. He made plays at both ends of the court and ultimately had 13 points, three steals, three rebounds and two assists. Grade: A.

Noah Hartsock: Supposedly Hartsock was doubtful after a sprain that he aggravated yesterday? Yeah, you would've never known after the junior produced a sensational shooting performance in the first half. Hartsock drained three 3s during the opening 20 minutes and gutted it out to finish with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. He was outstanding defensively in the second half. Grade: A+.

Brandon Davies: The 6-foot-9 sophomore from Provo High didn't ever get going offensively, but he found other ways to contribute. Davies played stellar defense late despite having four fouls and finished with six boards and three assists. Grade: B+.

RESERVES

James Anderson: He gave the Cougars quality minutes off the bench and was simply a presence in the middle until he went out with an injury. Grade: B.

Stephen Rogers: Like Anderson, the JC transfer helped BYU off the bench until he went out with an injury. Rogers played with composure and drained a big 3-pointer in the second half. Grade: B.

Kyle Collinsworth: The true freshman's minutes were severely limited on Saturday as he dealt with illness. Grade: Incomplete.
