BYU basketball: Report card vs. Wyoming

BYU lumbered and limped from start to finish on the road against Wyoming, but the eighth-ranked Cougars did just enough to beat the Cowboys, 69-62, on Wednesday evening. Here's how BYU's lethargic players graded over 40 minutes inside Arena Auditorium:

STARTERS

Jimmer Fredette: BYU's superstar finished with 26 points, but he seemed worn down by his recent super-human efforts throughout Wednesday's game. From beginning to end, he seemed sapped of energy and everything he did seemed labored. Fredette struggled with his shot throughout the game and didn't put his stamp on the game until the final minute of the second half. He finished 7-of-21 from the field. Grade: B.

Brandon Davies: The sophomore center enjoyed a fair amount of success offensively in the second half, which shouldn't be discounted, and he came close to a double-double. But in general, he failed to make game-winning plays on a lot of possessions in both halves. Whether it was turning the ball over six times or missing back-to-back free throws down the stretch, Davies enjoyed a roller-coaster night. On the plus side, he did finish with 20 points and nine boards. Grade: B.

Noah Hartsock: It's unfortunate Hartsock seems to be morphing into Jonathan Tavernari 2.0 on offense — not in terms of the volume of shots he takes but in terms of his contentment to stay on the perimeter and be nothing more than a 3-point shooter. It's somewhat understandable, given his current role in BYU's offense, but it hurts the Cougars a lot when his offensive contribution basically disappears whenever his 3-point shot does. Grade: D+.

Jackson Emery: Emery's 3-point shooting woes continued in the first half against Wyoming, as he went 0-for-3 from beyond the arc. Finally, he started to get on track in the second half with a pair of 3-point baskets. Emery finished with 12 points. As usual, he contributed in other ways. Grade: B.

Kyle Collinsworth: In his first year as a Cougar, Collinsworth has been charged by coach Dave Rose with the responsibility of playing tough defense, hustling on both ends and providing energy for his teammates. He did none of those things on Wednesday. Grade: C-.

RESERVES

Charles Abouo: Huffed and puffed for the Cougars, but while he played OK defense, he didn't enjoy the same sort of impact he has enjoyed in some other recent games. Grade: B-.

Stephen Rogers: Came in and drained his first shot — a long 2-pointer — but wasn't a major contributor otherwise. Grade: C.

Logan Magnusson: When summoned from the bench midway through the first half, he came in to the game and gave the Cougars some good energy. He didn't score any points but had three steals — all in the first half. Grade: B.

James Anderson: Had a solitary minute of action on Wednesday. Grade: Incomplete.

Brock Zylstra: Came off the bench and recorded a pair of minutes in the first half. Grade: Incomplete.
