SPANISH FORK — A 31-year-old Provo woman had to be flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital Monday after her vehicle was struck by a school bus.

The woman and her 7-year-old daughter were traveling east on state Route 164 around 9 a.m. when they were struck at the intersection of 1200 West, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Todd Johnson said. A Nebo County School District bus had been stopped at the two-way stop there, but headed south into the intersection, striking the vehicle's driver side.

"Either the (bus driver) didn't see them or thought they had enough time, but the bus made an unsafe start," Johnson said.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported in critical condition. Her daughter, however, sustained no injuries.

There were no children on the school bus at the time of the accident, but Johnson said the driver of such a bus should always use caution.

"School bus drivers are in a high profile vehicle," he said. "They do have additional training and, just like everybody else, they do need to use extreme caution with what they're driving."
