High school basketball: Corbin, Djuma lead West past Cottonwood
SALT LAKE CITY — Tyrell Corbin scored 25 points and teammates Gatete Djuma and Cheney Doane added 18 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the West Panthers to a 69-50 Region 2 victory over Cottonwood Tuesday night.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 12-2 lead before the Colts settled down and battled back to within eight at 19-11 at the end of the quarter.
Cottonwood cut the lead to six early in the second quarter before the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to lead by 10 points midway through the quarter. Despite outscoring the Panthers 15-14 in the quarter, the Colts trailed 33-26 at the break.
After the Colts cut the lead to five early in the third quarter, Corbin and Djuma went to work for the Panthers, who went on a 14-0 run to lead by 19 with 1:21 left in the quarter. West, which outscored Cottonwood 20-7 in the third quarter, led 53-33 heading the final frame.
Parker Vassau led the Colts with 23 points, while Vlad Malugin added 13.
The Panthers are back in action Friday when they travel to Hunter, while Cottonwood hosts Cyprus.
