SALT LAKE CITY — Mother Nature didn't disappoint on the official first day of winter.
Heavy snow on the southern end of the Wasatch Front and heavy rain in the southern portion of the state caused several problems Tuesday.
As of 7 a.m., Provo Canyon was closed eastbound while Utah Highway Patrol troopers dealt with a jackknifed semi-truck.
In the Nebo School District, the heavy snow and slick roads at first prompted district officials to cancel bus service for the day. But by 7:45 a.m., the district went ahead and cancelled classes too.
Chains or four-wheel drive were required on all vehicles in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. Solitude Ski Resort reported having 50 inches of new snow in the past 48 hours.
In southern Utah, the problem is rain and flooding.
Several areas were closed due to flooding including state Route 9 through Mt. Carmel Junction.
Flood waters are expected to crest by Tuesday afternoon.
