DIXIE STATE

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Dixie State College remained undefeated in Pacific West Conference play defeating the visiting Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur University 64-41 in front of 2,713 fans inside the Burns Arena in St. George on Monday night.

The Red Storm (12-3, 6-0 Pac West) outscored the Argos 32-15 in the second half to pull away with the victory.

Tom Whitehead netted his first five attempts from the floor for 14 points in the game's opening seven minutes. He ended the night 7-of-10 from the floor for a game-high 19 points. Jeremiah Barnes scored nine of his 15 points in the second half for another solid showing off the bench.

NDNU (2-15, 0-6 Pac West) was paced by Cheynne Lishman with 15 points. Season leading scorer Bennie Murray was held to six points on two-of-eight shooting.

Dixie State, geared by Whitehead's early offensive explosion, built a 16-4 lead at the 13:19 mark of the first half. NDNU cut the lead to one with 1:43 left on a Murray lay-in. The Storm responded with a 5-0 run highlighted by a Nick Howard steal and a lay-in by Barnes right before the buzzer to hold a 32-26 edge at the break.

The Storm opened the second half on a 6-2 run before the tide turned completely in Dixie State's favor. With 10:30 remaining, Whitehead blocked a three-ball form Murray, took the rebound down the court and jammed home an arena-erupting slam dunk for a 14-point lead. DSC reeled off six more points and extended the lead to 20.

Freshman Aaron Pugh nailed a late jumper, his first points of the year, to net the Storm's biggest advantage at 26. A last-second Lishman three made the final 64-41.

Dixie State bested NDNU in almost every offensive category. The Storm shined defensively enducing 17 turnovers while committing only four. DSC had 18 assists on their 26 field goals.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Freshman forward Deanna Daniels scored a career high 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds en route to a 88-77 victory over Notre Dame de Namur inside the Burns Arena in St. George on Monday night.

Opening the game on a 22-4 run the Red Storm (9-6, 5-1) appeared to have the game under control. But when senior guard Jessie Ingraham (15 points, 3 rebounds) hit her second three-pointer with 13:21 left, little did we know that DSC would follow by not hitting a shot until freshman forward Johnna Brown (12 points, 7 rebounds) scored with 6:52 left.

During the Red Storm cold spell the Argonauts (7-10, 3-3) would cut into the 18 point deficit and grab the lead with a 19-0 run of their own. The Red Storm would reclaim the lead at the half 35-31.

In the second half, the Red Storm would open up with a 10-4 run building their lead to 45-35 with 16:31 left. Dixie State would maintain that 10 point advantage the remainder of the game. DSC would shoot a stellar 52.9 percent in the second half.

Leading Notre Dame de Namur was Laura Zasly with 25 points and 9 rebounds and her sister Katie would collect a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Dixie State committed a season low nine turnovers and forced the Argonauts into 20. The Red Storm converted those 20 turnovers into 22 points.

Rounding out a Red Storm squad that had five players in double figures was Shane Vaifanua and Tanya Clark adding 10 points a piece. Dixie State shot 41.9 for the game.
