Here are some books that have crossed our desks recently.

HARDBACKS

"GRIMMER TALES: A Wicked Collection of Happily Never After Stories," by Erik Bergstrom, Plume, $16 (f)

Classic fairy tales are turned on their heads in this irreverent look at beloved family favorites. Pinocchio impales his wife with his nose. Little Boy Blue loses his brains when he trumpets his horn. And Rapunzel loses her head while her suitor climbs her hair. Accompanied by images reminiscent of Edward Gorey, this book is not for everyone and definitely not for young children.

"ROSES," by Leila Meacham, Grand Central Publishing, $24.99 (f)

Spanning the 20th century, this story takes place in a small east Texas town, against the backdrop of the powerful timber and cotton industries. This epic covers a hundred years, three generations of Texans and the explosive combination of passion for work and longing for love.
