College basketball roundup: Huskies win one for coach Calhoun

HARTFORD, Conn. — Playing its first game since coach Jim Calhoun took a medical leave of absence, Connecticut got 21 points from Jerome Dyson and the Huskies ended a three-game losing streak with a 75-59 win over St. John's on Wednesday night.

Stanley Robinson had 18 points and nine rebounds and Kemba Walker added 17 points and six assists for UConn (12-6, 3-3 Big East).

Longtime assistant coach George Blaney took over for the Huskies.

St. John's, (12-6, 2-4) which was coming off consecutive home wins over Cincinnati and DePaul, was led by D.J. Kennedy's 19 points. Dwight Hardy added 12 for the Red Storm.

UConn, which fell out of the Top 25 this week for the first time in 36 weeks, has won nine straight against St. John's since an overtime loss at Madison Square Garden in 2002.

UConn led just 31-28 at the half, but came out of intermission on an 11-4 run, led by Walker, who had seven during that stretch.

No. 3 KANSAS 81, No. 25 BAYLOR 75: At Lawrence, Kan., Sherron Collins had 28 points and hit his fifth 3-pointer with just over a minute left, helping the Jayhawks (17-1, 3-0) outlast Baylor.

No. 4 VILLANOVA 94, RUTGERS 68: At Piscataway, N.J., Dominic Cheek scored 17 points and Corey Stokes added 16 for Villanova.

No. 6 MICHIGAN STATE 70, IOWA 63: At East Lansing, Mich., Raymar Morgan scored 16 points and Michigan State remained unbeaten in Big Ten play by holding off Iowa's furious comeback bid.

No. 11 WEST VIRGINIA 68, MARSHALL 60: At Charleston, W.Va., Da'Sean Butler scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half for the Mountaineers (14-3).

No. 12 GEORGETOWN 74, No. 9 PITTSBURGH 66: At Pittsburgh, Chris Wright scored 27 points and Georgetown held Pittsburgh scoreless for four minutes while taking control with a late 9-0 run to end the Panthers' eight-game winning streak. Austin Freeman and Greg Monroe added 13 points each.

No. 16 TEMPLE 77, XAVIER 72: At Philadelphia, Ryan Brooks scored 22 points, Lavoy Allen had 16 and Temple beat Xavier in a matchup of Atlantic 10 unbeatens.

No. 18 WISCONSIN 54, MICHIGAN 48: At Madison, Wis., Trevon Hughes and Rob Wilson led a late scoring surge, powering Wisconsin past Michigan.
