SANDY — Phyllis Schlafly, the first lady of the conservative movement, addressed an audience of politically minded individuals Saturday night in the closing hour of the annual National Eagle Forum.

Schlafly founded the National Eagle Forum in the 1970s and has been actively involved in the conservative movement since then.

"We are proud to be an American, and that's what we're here for," Schlafly began. "We do have a calling, and that's to try and save America from the people who want to change us from what we are."

Schlafly addressed audience members on the future of the conservative movement, the action that needs to be taken in order to successfully restore conservatives to power and the positive signs she has seen that show that is the direction the U.S. is heading.

"This election will determine whether we have a different kind of a country," Schlafly said, encouraging participation in the upcoming election from all in the audience and endorsing Senate candidate Cherilyn Eagar. "Ever since Obama's election, the media had been proclaiming the death of the Republican Party."

Schlafly begs to differ.

"I think the American people are waking up," Schlafly said. "We can see it in reports of public approval."

Schlafly addressed current popular issues such as the health care bill, the lack of jobs in the U.S. and illegal immigration.

"(President Barack Obama's) health care bill is a scam because it will inevitably mean higher taxes and less choice," Schlafly said.

She said that people are beginning to realize how much debt Obama has created for the U.S. and will soon look other places for help. Schlafly said it is up to government to take control of the employment situation and find a solution to provide more people jobs in the U.S. And Schlafly only wants those jobs provided to people who are legally allowed to work in the U.S.

"We have an ample supply of high school dropouts ?— we do not need to enforce others," Schlafly said, referencing her belief that too many jobs are given to uneducated, illegal immigrants.

Schlafly also addressed what students are learning in school.

"The reason why the young people voted for Obama is that the whole school system has been infected with teaching this fraud called social justice," Schlafly said. "Social justice now means teaching kids that America is an oppressive, unjust and racist country."
