HYRUM, Cache County — One steer died and another was injured Thursday night when a semitrailer carrying 33 cattle left the road and rolled in dense fog near a meat-packing plant.
The truck driver, Michael Westmoreland, 64, of Plymouth, Box Elder County, was driving slowly and was unhurt. Visibility at the time was zero, according to Cache County sheriff's deputies.
The crash happened near 13200 South and 1200 West between the small towns of Hyrum and Nibley about 6:30 p.m. Smithfield Livestock Auction was contacted and responded with temporary cattle gates to pen the surviving cattle as they were taken from the trailer by local firefighters.
The animals were taken to the JBS meat-packing plant in Hyrum following the incident.
