KAYSVILLE — Kaysville is back to a full City Council after adding one member to its ranks.
Tuesday, during its regular council meeting, the Kaysville City Council selected resident Ally Isom to fill the remainder of Mayor Steve Hiatt's term.
Hiatt, who had been on the council for two years, was elected mayor in November, leaving a vacancy on the council.
Isom, who has lived in Kaysville for four years, said she decided to apply for the vacant seat during the holidays.
So did 14 other people.
During Tuesday's meeting, the 15 candidates each had five minutes to make a case for why they should be selected for the seat.
It was nearly 8:30 p.m. when the council retreated to deliberate in a closed session, Isom said. An hour later, the council returned to vote, but it took three votes before Isom came out as the winner.
Friday, Isom told the Deseret News she wanted to be part of the council because Kaysville has a unique heritage, and she doesn't want that to get lost.
"I don't think the community's history has to be sacrificed for new revenue streams," she said, adding that the city needs thoughtful planning. "We're at a juncture right now trying to define our future, given our long-term growth."
Isom currently works in the Utah Department of Workforce Services as director of government affairs and also works in finding efficiencies and new revenue streams for the department.
Isom said she has been involved in politics for years, but this is her first time holding office.
Isom is married to Eric Isom, Qwest's government affairs director, and has four children.
