HARDBACKS

"A MOUNTAIN OF CRUMBS: A Memoir," by Elena Gorokhova, Simon & Schuster, $26 (nf)

Elena Gorokhova shares her experience of growing up in Soviet Russia in the 1960s and 1970s. Elena was born in Leningrad to a mother who had been a front-line surgeon during World War II and a father who was a distinguished member of the Communist Party, who never talked about his past. When Elena is 10, she falls in love with the English language and spends the next eight years at a special English school, later going on to study English at Leningrad University. Through her job and English books that circulate covertly among friends, Elena gets glimpses of the outside world. She despairs of ever leaving Russia, until she meets a visiting American who proposes marriage.

PAPERBACKS

"TRUE COLORS," by Kristin Hannah, St. Martin's Griffin, $14.99 (f)

The Grey sisters had only each other when their mother died years ago. Their stern, unyielding father gave them almost no attention. Winona, the oldest, needs her father's approval most of all. Aurora, the middle, is the peacemaker. Vivi Ann, the youngest, is the undisputed star of the family. But when Vivi Ann makes a fateful decision to follow her heart, rather than take the route of a dutiful daughter, events are set in motion that will test the love and loyalties of the Grey sisters.
