2 teens arrested Friday in Lehi High bomb threat

LEHI — Two teens have been arrested and accused of leaving a voice message at Lehi High School threatening a bomb would go off Friday.

The school was on lockdown for more than an hour starting at 11:45 a.m. Friday. Bomb-sniffing dogs combed the campus. Roads surrounding the school were closed.

Police believe the message, which said a bomb would detonate with the last bell of the school day, was recorded Thursday night.

Two teens were taken into custody Friday afternoon, said Lehi Police Lt. Darren Paul.

Alpine School District spokeswoman Rhonda Bromley said one is in 10th grade at Lehi High. The other boy is a former student who should be in the 10th grade.

Bromley said the current student is suspended until a district hearing next week. District officials said the student has violated the school safety policy and they will be meeting with his parents.

"This is pretty serious," Bromley said. "Safety is a top priority for our district. Everyone looks at this as a very serious thing. Appropriate actions will be taken as far as the student is considered."

Investigators met with school administrators Friday morning after the voice mail was discovered to discuss how to proceed.

Bromley said students were kept in the school on police direction. This is because the threat was for a bomb to go off after school. Further, in national school bomb threat incidents, students have been evacuated only to be met by snipers.

Teachers were informed of the situation via e-mail to reduce speculation and fear, she said.
