Giuliani campaigns for Mass. GOP Senate candidate

BOSTON (AP) — Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani says electing a Republican to the Senate seat formerly held by Edward Kennedy would signal that voters believe the nation is going in the wrong direction in the fight against terrorism.

Giuliani came to Boston as a new poll showed a statistical tie between Republican Scott Brown and the Democratic nominee in Tuesday's special election, Martha Coakley.

The Suffolk University survey reshaped the closing weekend of the campaign, which the Democrats had expected to win in this heavily Democratic state. Losing the seat would cost the Democrats their 60-vote coalition in the Senate, essential to countering Republican opposition that could to block much of President Barack Obama's agenda.

Kennedy died in August of brain cancer after a nearly 47-year career.
