High school football: Matich leaves Park City to coach at East High
SALT LAKE CITY — Brandon Matich decided to follow in his grandfather's footsteps.
Matich, who coached Park City's football program for five years and led the Miners to the 3A semifinals in each of past two seasons, was officially unveiled as the new head coach at East High Wednesday evening during the Leopards' football banquet.
Matich's grandfather, Grant Martin, was the head coach of East High's program for 23 years, and now Matich is headed to fill his grandfather's old post.
Matich was offered the head-coaching job at East and at a high-level 5A school, but he ultimately chose to accept the job that used to belong to his grandfather.
East High's administration couldn't be happier.
"We are just tickled pink," said East principal Paul Sagers of landing Matich. "We're very excited down here. Our players were hoping it would be him. Both sides of the community are very happy to have him."
In five seasons at Park City High, Matich compiled a 39-18 record with the Miners. Known as one of the most emotional coaches in the state, choosing to leave the players he cares deeply for was an unbelievably difficult decision.
In the end, though, Matich decided he wants to be like his granddad.
