FILLMORE — A second man has been charged in connection with the slaying of Millard County sheriff's deputy Josie Greathouse Fox.

Ruben Chavez-Reyes, 36, was charged Tuesday in 4th District Court with obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony. Officials have not specified what role investigators believe he played, but the charge says he "did provide a person with transportation or other means of avoiding discovery or apprehension."

Fox was gunned down Jan. 5 while making a traffic stop of a suspected burglar who was driving a Cadillac on U.S. 50. The man police believe was the driver, Roberto Miramontes Roman, 37, has been charged with capital murder and, if convicted, could face the death penalty.

Investigators initially said Chavez-Reyes owned the Cadillac that Fox had stopped and a Corvette that was discovered in Salt Lake City later that day with one of the license plates from the Cadillac. The discovery of the two vehicles touched off a statewide manhunt, with SWAT teams swarming homes in Salt Lake and Nephi, where the Cadillac was found.

The search ended Jan. 6 when Roman and Chavez-Reyes were found sleeping in a shed behind a mobile home in Beaver.

Chavez-Reyes is scheduled to make his first court appearance Jan. 20 in Fillmore. Roman is also slated to be in court that day for an update on the state's progress in appointing an attorney qualified to represent him in a capital case.
