Law not meant for ATVS

I had to chuckle when I read the editorial in the Jan. 8 paper about new laws hitting the books. The article pictured a father and son riding their ATVs. One of the new laws mentioned was an Oregon law mandating those under 16 years of age must wear a seat belt. The article applauded that law implyinging that our lawmakers should look into it.

The editorial team needs to get out from behind their desks and ride ATVs. The law enacted by Oregon lawmakers applies to "Class 1" vehicles, which come standard with seat belts and most people do wear them. This law does not apply to the majority of ATVs, like those pictured. Heaven forbid if they tried to mandate seat belts for this type of ATV. The last thing I would want to see is my child seat-belted as the ATV rolls down the mountain end over end.

Know your ATVs. Get out and ride and have some fun.
