MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Day one of the 2010 season was a success as the No. 6 BYU men's volleyball team notched wins against No. 2 UC Irvine and No. 8 UCLA on Thursday in the first two rounds of the Santa Barbara Invitational at Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Cougars opened the tournament with a 3-1 upset victory (22-30, 30-26, 30-22, 30-27) over the Anteaters. UCI claimed the 2009 national championship played in Provo last May.

Senior outside hitter Andrew Stewart led the Cougars with 19 kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Kevin Sagers and Robb Stowell contributed 17 kills apiece. Both Stewart and Sagers recorded double-doubles with 15 and 10 digs, respectively. Stewart picked up where he left off in 2009, when he earned 22 double-doubles on the season.

In its second match of the day, BYU pulled out a tough five-set win over UCLA (30-26, 24-30, 27-30, 30-24, 15-11).

With the wins, the Cougars advanced to the tournament championship match on Friday when they faced No. 9 Cal State Northridge.

SWIMMING/DIVING: With over 400 fans in attendance, the BYU women's swimming team defeated TCU 197-90 while the BYU men fell to the

Horned Frogs' men 172-119 Friday night in the Richards Building Pool.

"The TCU men swam very well tonight and our women had a lot of depth," BYU head coach Tim Powers said. "It was the tale of two teams tonight, but I am very pleased with some of the swims we had tonight."

The women were led by Rachel Grant, who broke the BYU pool record in the 200 individual medley and also won the 200 butterfly and the 100 butterfly. Natasha Menezes, Candice Smith and Aleesha Miller also all won two events apiece to help the Cougars win. The BYU women won every event on the night.

Placing first for the men was John Kendrick in the 1000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, Christian Keil in the 200 freestyle and Brandon Watson on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard diving events.

The BYU women started off the meet right, winning the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:45.24, with Smith in the backstroke, Sara Jayne

Christiansen Baldwin in the breaststroke, Grant in the butterfly and Miller in the freestyle to anchor it. The men were disqualified by an early takeoff, giving the Horned Frogs 15 points to start off the meet.

The distance team of Amy Xu, Alina Fong and Michelle Menezes went 1-2-3 in the women's 1000 freestyle. Xu won with a time of 10:27.04, Fong had a time of 10:31.38 and Menezes tallied a time of 10:32.30.

In the men's 1000 freestyle, Kendrick fought for the lead with TCU's Trevor Woods and came out on top with a time of 9:47.07. Woods trailed close behind with a time of 9:47.71 in second.
