Here are some of the latest movies to land on DVD, led by an animated favorite from last fall.
"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" (Columbia, 2009, PG, two discs, $34.95). I'm a sucker for visual gags, and this goofy animated feature has plenty in its story of a crackpot inventor who comes up with a way of turning water vapor into food. Yes, cheeseburgers fall from the sky.
Clever and witty and very anti-Disney, this in-your-face cartoon is a treat for kids, and parents will chuckle as well. Voices include Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Bruce Campbell, Neil Patrick Harris, Lauren Graham, Al Roker and Mr. T.
Extras: widescreen/full frame options, extended scenes, audio commentary, featurettes, interactive games, sing-along, music video, trailers (also available in one-disc DVD, $28.96, and Blu-ray/DVD Combo, $39.95)
"Riding Giants" (Sony Classics/Blu-ray, 2004, PG-13, $24.95). The "Giants" are Pacific Ocean waves up to 50-feet high, which are especially stunning in this new Blu-ray edition of Stacy Peralta's eye-popping documentary. And those waves are sought out by fearless surfers whose exploits will have you on the edge of your seat.
Extras: widescreen, deleted scenes, audio commentaries, featurettes, trailers
"Dogtown and Z-Boys" (Sony Classics/Blu-ray, 2002, PG-13, $24.95). Peralta's skateboarding documentary put him on the map, and it remains the definitive work on the subject. Like "Riding Giants," this one is bolstered by archival footage as well as interviews that tell the fascinating stories of the principals here.
Extras: widescreen, deleted/expanded scenes, alternate ending, audio commentary featurettes, trailers
"Call of the Wild 3-D" (Vivendi, 2009, PG, $19.99). Not so much an adaptation of Jack London's oft-filmed classic novel as an homage. A young girl visiting her grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) in Montana nurses a wild wolf back to health. Grandpa reads "Call of the Wild" to her, to help her realize the wolf has to go back into the wild, but she wants to train it as a sled dog. Timothy Bottoms, Wes Studi and faded TV stars Joyce DeWitt and Jaleel White also show up.
Extras: widescreen, 3-D and "flat" options, deleted scenes, audio commentary, featurette, interactive game; 3-D glasses
