HARDBACKS

"EVENING'S EMPIRE," by Bill Flanagan, Simon & Schuster, $26.95 (f)

Bill Flanagan uses his knowledge of the music business to write a novel about 40 years in the lives of a fictional British rock manager and the band he manages. The story travels from 1960s London at the height of the British Invasion to the commercialism of the music industry now. It's told from the viewpoint of Jack Flynn, a young solicitor, who happens into the job as manager for the British band Ravons. The story covers all aspects of the highs and lows of being a rock star and the problems of managing a band.

"THE 5 GREATEST WARRIORS," by Matthew Reilly, Simon & Schuster, $25 (f)

This is a sequel to "The 6 Sacred Stones." Jack West Jr. has miraculously escaped from his fall into a bottomless abyss and regroups with his trusty team. Reunited in Zanzibar, the team puzzles over the location of the missing pillars needed to save the world from destruction. With clues given to them from Diane Cassidy, an American archaeologist, they race around the world, from Japan to Scotland, from the steppes of Mongolia to ocean islands, to stave off Armageddon.
