CEDAR CITY — A minor earthquake here Monday did little more than rattle nerves.
The 4.1 magnitude quake, which occurred at 9:24 a.m., was centered about 8 miles south-southeast of Cedar City and located about 2 miles below the surface, according to University of Utah seismograph stations.
"It was quite short and sweet, but it had a little teeth to it," said Charlie Morris, director of emergency management for Iron County.
"It only lasted, in this area where I am, about 10 to 15 seconds," Morris said. "What it reminded me of was when you get a heavy truck out on the road and it rumbles by, but this just increased and got a lot worse."
Public safety dispatchers in Iron County received about 10 calls to report the earthquake. Authorities had not received any reports of damage or injuries.
"If people do have some damage, we need to record it," Morris said.
U. seismology records indicate that 23 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or greater have occurred within 16 miles of the epicenter of Monday's quake since 1962. The largest one was a magnitude 4.2 quake on June 28, 1992.
"We go through some of our most critical things that could happen, and you've got to put earthquakes up there on the list," Morris said.
