Beltre close to signing with Red Sox

A person familiar with the negotiations says free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre and the Boston Red Sox are close to agreeing on a one-year contract.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday night because an agreement, which would be subject to a physical, had not been reached.

A home run threat known for strong defense, Beltre spent the past five years with Seattle. Injuries limited him to 111 games last season, when he batted .265 with eight homers and 44 RBIs.

Beltre is a two-time Gold Glove winner who turns 31 in April. He would supplant Mike Lowell at third base in Boston — the Red Sox tried to trade the 2007 World Series MVP to Texas last month but weren't able to finalize the swap.

Olivo agrees to deal with Rockies

DENVER — The Colorado Rockies and catcher Miguel Olivo agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract Monday that includes a club option for 2011.

Olivo will share catching duties with Chris Iannetta. Free agent Yorvit Torrealba wanted to return to the Rockies but the sides couldn't reach a deal this offseason.

Bay to earn $66 million with Mets

NEW YORK — A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that Jason Bay's contract with the New York Mets includes a $17 million option for 2014 with a $3 million buyout.

Bay took a physical Monday, a necessary step to finalize the deal, and the Mets scheduled a Tuesday news conference at Citi Field to introduce their first major free-agent signing of the offseason.

He is guaranteed $66 million under the four-year contract and could make $80 million over five seasons, the person said.

Pacquiao-Mayweather fight in limbo

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are going to mediation to try and salvage their March 13 fight. Representatives of the two fighters will meet Tuesday with a California mediator in an effort to reach agreement on blood testing issues that have threatened to derail the fight. The mediation comes after two weeks of talks on the issue.

The mediator, retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein, was used by promoters for both fighters three years ago to resolve a dispute over promotional rights to Pacquiao.
