Trailing 14-0 in the opening quarter, Utah's Shaky Smithson returns a kickoff 61 yards to the California 30 to set up the Utes' first scoring drive — an eight-play series capped by a 6-yard TD pass from Wynn to tight end Kendrick Moeai. It opened a run of 24 straight points by Utah.

With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, Utah takes the lead with a 15-yard scoring strike from Wynn to Moeai. The TD came on third-and-10 and followed an incompletion on the previous play. It gave the Utes a 16-14 advantage and a lead they would never surrender.
