Wednesday marks the 100th anniversary of the launching of the battleship USS Utah on Dec. 23, 1909, at Camden, N.J. The hull was christened by Mary Alice Spry, the daughter of then-Utah Gov. William Spry. The superstructure was completed two years later in 1911, when the battleship was formally commissioned. The USS Utah sank on Dec. 7, 1941, during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. A memorial was later placed atop its final resting place. The battleship rests on its side on the west side of Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.
