Spanish Fork plans for homes, schools

SPANISH FORK — Following a lengthy slowing in construction, city officials are seeing an increase in development activity — including plans for new homes, at least two future schools and a park.

Housing permits in Spanish Fork from January to November this year have increased from the same time period a year ago, according to the city's building department. During that time last year, the department issued 194 permits for twin homes, townhouses and single-family homes; this year, it issued 228.

And more development is on the way.

On Tuesday, the Spanish Fork City Council amended a preliminary plat at 100 North and 1500 East to allow a 12-acre elementary school in the Maple Mountain subdivision. Some of the 152 homes there already have been built, and several other are under construction.

The council also amended the Pine View subdivision plat to create a lot for yet another elementary school. That, too, is a 12-acre site and is located near U.S. 6 at 2700 East and 750 South. Currently, Nebo School District has no plans to build the school, and the subdivision may not see any development for several years, said city planner Dave Andersen.
