SALT LAKE CITY — Beginning Jan. 1, Utahns will be required to present new documentation when they apply for a new driver's license or renew their old one.
The change results from the passage of SB40 during the 2009 legislative session. The bill clarified what constitutes acceptable documentation for proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence in the country.
Under the new law, the Driver License Division may issue a "regular" driver's license, state identification card or commercial driver's license only to U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents or nationals.
A "limited-term" driver's license, state ID card or commercial driver's license may be issued to individuals who provide proof of their legal presence in the United States.
Applicants who do not qualify for "regular" or "limited-term" licenses or ID cards, may be eligible for a driving privilege card.
A full list of the documentation required for each class of state license or ID card is available online at www.publicsafety.utah.gov/dld.
Because of the new requirements, online renewal will no longer be an option after Jan. 1. There are no changes to other licensing requirements or fees.
