PROVO — Quarterback Jake Heaps and wide receiver Ross Apo signed scholarship agreements to enroll at BYU in January, the school announced Thursday.
"I'm certainly glad they have the mind-set and want to be here to get extra training to be ready in for the fall. I think that will help them," said coach Bronco Mendenhall. "It's really the ideal time for a freshman to come into the program. Now, you're able to go through off-season conditioning, you're able to go through spring practices and go through summer before fall camp. They're a lot more accustomed to what school is like and managing the workload. If I had my preference, it's better for the young man and it's better for the program."
Heaps, ranked the No. 1 prep quarterback in the nation by Scout.com, and Apo, who averaged 19.1 yards per catch during his career at the Oakridge school in Arlington, Tex., will join the Cougars in January along with four other players who previously signed national letters of intent with BYU — linebacker Kyle Van Noy, offensive lineman Famika Anae, tight end Devin Mahina, and wide receiver Marcus Mathews.
