SLEIGH RIDES TO BEGIN
HYRUM — Sleigh rides offering an up-close look at as many as 600 wild Rocky Mountain elk will get under way Saturday at the Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area, located 17 miles east of Hyrum and 22 miles southeast of Logan.
The sleigh rides last 20-30 minutes and wind through the center of the elk herd, making an occasional stop to allow for photographs. During the rides, the sleigh drivers share the history of the ranch and explain why the elk behave like they do. The drivers also are happy to answer any questions.
The sleighs are pulled by a team of large-breed draft horses. If snow conditions get poor, the sleighs can be converted into wagons.
The rides are available on Fridays (except Christmas) and Mondays from noon to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The rides cost $5 for people ages 9 and older and $3 for those 4 to 8 years of age, with children 3 and younger riding for free. Tickets must be purchased before 4:30 p.m., as the last sleight ride leaves at that time.
The WMA's winter season should run until March 15.
In addition to the sleigh rides, the Hardware Ranch WMA also operates a visitors center which features interactive wildlife displays and a staff who can answer your questions.
Lodging, food and entertainment are readily available in Cache Valley, within 45 minutes of the ranch.
