NFL notes: No Holmgren deal in Cleveland — yet
Mike Holmgren remained unemployed. Eric Mangini stayed on the job, and the Cleveland Browns were still a mess.
That was about the extent of things following a drawn-out Tuesday with scarce information as the Browns, searching for a leader to head their football operations, continued talks with Holmgren, the former Seattle and Green Bay coach who wants back into the NFL.
Holmgren, with one Super Bowl title and success brimming from his resume, spent his second day meeting with owner Randy Lerner at the team's suburban headquarters. Despite the lengthy stay, there was no indication that a deal was imminent.
In an e-mail to The Associated Press, Lerner suggested the sides still were talking but gave no specifics.
VIKINGS LB SUSPENDED FOR 4 GAMES: Minnesota Vikings backup linebacker Erin Henderson was suspended for four games Tuesday for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. The suspension covers Minnesota's final three regular-season games and first playoff game. The NFL does not specify the substances for which players test positive.Henderson is the younger brother of fellow linebacker E.J. Henderson, who broke his left leg Dec. 6 and is out indefinitely.
FITZGERALD SAYS HE'S 'OK': All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has a bruised bone and a sprained right knee, leaving his status uncertain for the Arizona Cardinals' game Sunday at Detroit. The Cardinals said an MRI on Tuesday determined the extent of the injury but showed no more significant damage. Fitzgerald said on Twitter on Monday night that he was "sore but OK." Asked again on Tuesday, he answered he was "sore but straight."
COWBOYS' WARE FEELING BETTER: Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware said his sprained neck felt "100 percent better" on Tuesday but he did not practice and will undergo more tests before the team decides whether he will be available to face unbeaten New Orleans on Saturday night. Ware is supposed to have X-rays, an MRI and other tests Wednesday to see if the swelling is gone and to make sure there are no problems.
KEMOEATU WILL SIT OUT GAME: Pittsburgh Steelers left guard Chris Kemoeatu will sit out Sunday's game against Green Bay with right wrist and right knee injuries.
Coach Mike Tomlin says Kemoeatu has been "playing one-handed" at times because of the wrist injury and that he needs a week off to heal. Kemoeatu will be replaced by undrafted rookie Ramon Foster.
