WEST VALLEY CITY — The husband of a woman missing for more than a week answered police questions Tuesday after declining to show up for an interview with police the previous night, his attorney said.
Salt Lake attorney Scott Williams told the Associated Press that he and Josh Powell met with West Valley City police on Tuesday.
Police said they weren't happy when Powell — whose wife, Susan, has been missing since Dec. 6 — failed to show up for a third interview Monday night, based on advice from his attorney.
"We had him scheduled. Up until the night before, everything was good to go," said West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan. "We were a bit surprised he did not (show up). We're not very happy with it. It frustrates us. It slows down the investigation."
Police were not calling Josh Powell a suspect on Tuesday.
Powell has retained the services of Williams, who has represented such high-profile defendants as Wanda Barzee, who pleaded guilty in federal court in November to kidnapping Elizabeth Smart, and Christopher Jeppson, one of the two men charged in the 1995 disappearance and suspected death of Kiplyn Davis.
Meanwhile, there was no new information Tuesday about the disappearance of Susan Powell.
"We have searched the house, the area around the house, the neighborhood. The fact is, we just don't have a specific area (to search). There are no new leads. She has not been sighted anywhere to mount a search in that area," McLachlan said.
Josh Powell has told police he left with his boys, ages 2 and 4, about midnight on Dec. 6 to go camping in Tooele. The temperature that night was about 10 degrees. He said all three slept in their minivan.
On Monday, Dec. 7, a concerned family member went to the Powell home after being notified that neither Susan nor Josh Powell had shown up for work and their children had not been dropped off at day care. Josh Powell later told reporters he didn't show up for work because he got his days mixed up and thought it was Sunday.
Josh Powell's mother arrived at the house Monday and found it was locked and saw no signs of forced entry. She called police, fearing a carbon monoxide incident. Officers broke into the house and found many of Susan Powell's personal items still inside. They also found two fans pointed at a wet spot on the floor.
Josh Powell returned home about 5 p.m. that afternoon. He was interviewed by police that night. A second interview was conducted the next day, McLachlan said.
