Snowfall brings an avalanche of accidents
SALT LAKE CITY — More than 100 accidents rippled across northern Utah thanks to slick roads from Sunday's snowstorm.
Although the Salt Lake area received minimal snowfall, the Ogden and South Ogden areas were hit with 10-12 inches, and the Canyons and Alta ski resorts had 22 inches each.
Semitrailers traveling Parleys Canyon struggled with the snow Sunday, and the freeway was nearly shut down, Utah Highway Patrol officials reported.
While the Salt Lake metro area reported only 1.3 inches of snow, UHP reported 26 property-damage accidents from midnight to 4 p.m., five of which involved injuries.
Utah County had 16 accidents with property damage and three with injuries, and Davis County had about 70 slide-offs and motorist assists and 19 property-damage accidents.
Meteorologists said Utah won't be seeing more snow any time soon.
The Salt Lake Office of the National Weather Service said snow showers were expected to taper off Sunday night along the Wasatch Front before an inversion settles in the valley over the next few days. Residents can expect temperature highs in the upper 20s and low 30s today, and mid-20s on Tuesday.
"The frigid air is gone for a while," meteorologist Chris Young said.
Most winter storm warnings for Utah were canceled Sunday evening, Young said.
I-15 had minimal traffic or congestion despite the snowfall, and the southbound lanes that the Utah Department of Transportation had closed over the weekend for a bridge demolition serving U.S. 89 near the Davis County line is now open.
The northbound lanes reopened Saturday night, officials said.
