SLCC rides hot first half to victory over North Idaho

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team escaped with an 89-84 win over third-ranked North Idaho on Friday night.

Salt Lake held a 20-point halftime lead. However, poor shooting (23 percent) in the second half allowed North Idaho to close the gap. The free-throw line was the story of the game, with SLCC going 28-of-41 from the line in the second half. A total of 65 fouls were called, with five North Idaho players fouling out.

Wil Carter finished with a double-double, collecting a season-high 17 rebounds along with 19 points for the Bruins. Collin Chiverton led all scoring with 23 points, and Darian Norris added 14 points and five assists.

Salt Lake (10-3, 3-2 SWAC) has won three games in a row and looks to make it four with a matchup against the College of Southern Idaho (8-2, 2-1 SWAC) today at 5 p.m. in Bruin Arena.

Women's games

SLCC 78, NORTH IDAHO 68: At Salt Lake City, Haley Holmstead scored 31 points to lead second-ranked Salt Lake Community College to its 12th win in a row by defeating North Idaho on Friday night.

SLCC held a 20-point halftime lead, holding North Idaho to 31 percent shooting in the half. SLCC now controls the SWAC with a 5-0 record and is 12-1 overall.

Holmstead had the hot hand for the Bruins, missing only five shots in going 13-of-18 from the field. Kelsey Sparkman was a perfect 5-for-5 for 12 points while Allie Blake added 10 for SLCC.

Salt Lake puts its 12-game win streak on the line today when the Bruins face the College of Southern Idaho at 3 p.m. in Bruin Arena.
