Comments sought on cave staircase
Public comment is being sought on the National Park Service's proposal to construct a stairway at the exit of the Timpanogos Cave National Monument.
Recently rockfall analysis experts visited the park and identified major potential hazards that could result in damage to the trail, electrical power or harm to visitors or staff.
The new stairway, according to a press release, would be placed at the exit of the cave and descend along the cliff face, meeting up with the present trail below. For additional protection, the current exit roof would be extended to cover the stairs.
As required under federal environmental regulations, the National Park Service is working on an environmental assessment that, among other things, would identify potential alternatives and ways to mitigate environmental impacts.
Written comments are being accepted through Dec. 21 at parkplanning.nps.gov/tica.
