WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Utah junior opposite hitter Karolina Bartkowiak earned Honorable Mention All-West Region recognition, it was announced Wednesday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
This was the first All-West region honor of Bartkowiak's career. She earned her second straight All-Mountain West Conference selection in 2009 and finished sixth in the MWC's overall statistics with 3.04 kills and 3.59 points per set. In 16 conference matches, Bartkowiak was fifth in the conference-only statistics with 3.17 kills and 3.70 points per set. Bartkowiak posted 12 double-doubles this season, the first of career, and led Utah in kills 15 times, blocks three times and digs once.
Bartkowiak served as a team tri-captain and earned 2009 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII First-Team accolades. She was also named the MWC Player of the Week three times: Aug. 31, Sept. 28 and Oct. 12.
The Aurora, Ill., native was named MVP of the Utah Classic and was selected to Santa Clara Invitational All-Tournament team. She hit a career-high 22 kills and had 17 digs against BYU on Sept. 25 and had a career-high 23 digs against TCU on Oct. 8. She hit for a career-high .800 hitting percentage and tied her season high with six blocks against Weber State on Oct. 6.
