OGDEN — Robert W. Johnson, Ogden postmaster, will retire from the U.S. Postal Service on Thursday after 43 years of federal service, including 30 years as postmaster.

Postal employees will gather for a retirement celebration at the main Ogden post office on that day.

Johnson also served for 27 years as a member of the Utah National Guard and was deployed to Iraq in 2003-04 for a 16-month tour of duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"It's been a pleasure serving my country, both as a postal employee and as a member of the Armed Forces," Johnson said. "I will miss working with the great postal employees of Ogden, who every day give our customers their very best."

Johnson started his postal career in 1966 as a clerk at the Ogden Terminal Annex. He served in numerous management positions, including facility analyst in Ogden; manager, Postal Employee Development Center in Boise, Idaho; and postmaster of Kaysville. Johnson was named Ogden postmaster in 1979. All current Ogden postal facilities were constructed while he was facility analyst and postmaster.

Until a permanent postmaster is selected, the acting Ogden postmaster will be Byron Burnett, who is a former manager of customer services at the Ogden post office.
