High school boys basketball: Provo star passes Bulldogs to win
PROVO — The look the Provo Bulldogs saw from the Springville Red Devils on Wednesday night in their down-to-the-wire 63-60 boys basketball win at the McKay Events Center at Utah Valley University is likely what they're going to see all season.
But as long as the results are the same, coach Craig Drury won't care if opposing teams give extra attention to stopping 6-foot-6 Bulldog point guard Kyle Collinsworth.
"Every time he catches the ball, the closest guys are going to make sure he can't go anywhere," Dury said.
That's exactly what the Red Devils did when Collinsworth made any move toward the paint. But with two or three guys trying to stop Collinsworth, someone had to be open. And Collinsworth did what star players do when double- and triple-teamed. He found the open guys — to the tune of 14 assists.
"Kyle can get 30 points one night and 14 the next, and be equally as effective," Drury said. "It's not like he has to score to be effective. He's effective no matter which role he's playing."
Ten of those assists went to fellow guards Ryan Durrant and Keith Moore, who combined to drill 11 shots from behind the 3-point line. Durrant, with seven treys in 11 attempts, finished with a game-high 25. Moore hit four threes and tallied 16 points.
"I get 55 of 63 points from the perimeter. That's why I wouldn't trade my guard line for anybody's," Dury said.
The BYU-bound Collinsworth also finished with five rebounds and 14 points.
"That's a good scoring night when they're doubling him like that," Dury said.
Even with those impressive numbers, it wasn't like the Bulldogs had their way with the feisty Red Devils. In fact, Springville actually had a chance to take the lead in the game's final 10 seconds. At times it was evident that the Bulldogs were breaking in several new players into their lineup, and that a good share of Springville's players were wearing football gear less than a week ago. All that, however, resulted in game that had 10 lead changes and eight ties.
