Brad Rock: Rock on ...
Bowled over
Quick quiz on this week's BYU-Utah game.
The loser of Saturday's game qualifies for:
(a) The Las Vegas Bowl
(b) The Poinsettia Bowl
(c) The Fort Worth Bowl
(d) The I-Forgot-You-Were-Still-Playing Bowl
Trending down
The biggest question surrounding the BYU-Utah game this week is:
(a) Can Max Hall overcome Utah's defensive speed?
(b) Is Jordan Wynn ready for such an intense rivalry game?
(c) Can Utah do anything to slow down Dennis Pitta?
(d) Which team looked worse against TCU?
Russell redux
After Robbie Russell score the game-winning penalty kick in Sunday's MLS Cup match, the thought occurred: Finally, there's a guy from Utah, named Russell, who wore No.3, who actually did make the big play in the clutch.
Man country
TCU's pregame notes, prior to this year's football game against Utah, pointed out that ESPN rated the school's mascot, the Horned Frog, the best in America.
The notes also said Men's Health rated the Fort Worth area No. 2 in the nation in beautiful women per capita, second only to Honolulu.
Rock On also rates Fort Worth the No.1 place to get your pants kicked if you (a) go there to play the Frogs in football or (b) ask for a chilled cucumber sandwich for lunch.
Missing pieces
This from sportscurmudgeon.com, which recently noted the New Orleans Hornets' surprisingly slow start: "According to one report that I read, Chris Paul said that the only things that the Hornets were lacking so far this year are 'defense and the ability to score.' Memo to Chris Paul: That means you are lacking each and every critical element needed to win basketball games."
Fuzzy logic
Mark Spitz recently told the Colorado Springs Gazette that the night before his first race in the 1972 Summer Olympics, a Russian swim coach asked him if his mustache slowed him down.
Spitz, who went on to win seven gold medals, said, "It doesn't. It deflects water away from my mouth."
Spitz claimed the next year every Russian swimmer had a mustache, "and, unfortunately, a couple of East German women swimmers, too."
On display
Chicago Luvabull and Miss Illinois Ashley Bond to the Chicago Sun Times' Elliott Harris: "I love hosting for BullsTV.com. So check out some of my stuff."
Just asking: When you're a Luvabull and a beauty contestant, isn't that what people are doing anyway?
Sweet nothings
Cam Hutchinson of the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix on rumors the New York Majesty is about to fold: "When a lingerie football team goes under, do the players get pink slips?"
