First our state Legislature passed the flat income tax, which favors the wealthy and takes millions out of public education revenue. Now, with the failing economy and lower tax revenue, some legislators have proposed reinstating the full sales tax on food, which would again favor the wealthy; and none of the increased revenue would be required to go to public education.
If our legislators were actually concerned about public education, the first tax increase they would make would be a return to the graduated income tax which, by law, would go into public education. If that didn't do enough, then maybe they could look at the sales tax on food.
