SLCC women's hoops team edges North Idaho

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The third-ranked Salt Lake Community College extended its winning streak to seven games after defeating North Idaho 62-61.

With the game tied at 61, Allie Blake hit 1 of 2 free throws to win the game for Salt Lake. Salt Lake is 7-1 overall and 2-0 in Scenic West action.

Blake was the hero for the Bruins, hitting a clutch free throw to win the game, finishing with 22 points and eight rebounds. Haley Holmstead continued her stellar play with 22 points along with Dayna Burgess who scored 10 points. Salt Lake was down four at halftime when it ramped up the defense to hold North Idaho to 37-percent shooting in the second half while the Bruins shot 55 percent to close the gap.

No. 3 SLCC women's basketball opens up its home season Friday against Colorado Northwestern at 5:30 p.m.

FREED-HARDEMAN 101, WESTMINSTER 74: At Jackson, Tenn., Freed-Hardeman set a new program record by making 17-of-30 from 3-point range — including 9-of-15 in the second half — to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 101-74 win over Westminster at the Jackson Rotary Classic. The loss to No. 6 Freed-Hardeman (7-0) completed the Griffins' (4-4) trip to Tennessee with a 1-2 record.

Tara Deatheridge had the hottest hand for FHU, draining 9-of-15 from behind the arc to tie her school record for most 3-pointers in a game that she established on Dec. 13, 2008. She hit 7-of-8 in the second half as FHU outscored the Griffins 61-36 over the game's final 20 minutes.
