Utah Utes football: Ex-Ute returns to celebrate personal 'senior day'
Sean Smith wound up making it to his "Senior Day."
The Miami Dolphins rookie, who left Utah for the National Football League after his junior season, returned to Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday to watch his former teammates defeat San Diego State. Smith was on the Ute sideline during the 38-7 victory.
"It was kind of weird not being on the field. Words can't really explain the feeling," Smith said. "I was very proud of the guys I've seen grow up and become playmakers for this team."
Smith, a defensive back with 30 tackles (25 solo) in 10 games with Miami, flew to Salt Lake City hours after the Dolphins' 24-17 victory at Carolina Thursday night. He planned to fly back to Florida Saturday evening.
"I keep in touch with a whole bunch of guys on the team," Smith said while noting it was a "good feeling" to watch them play again. "It was a quick trip but I'm glad I made it."
Returning for what would have been his "Senior Day," he added, made it even more special.
As for life in the NFL, Smith said it's been great, he loves it and he's having fun.
"I'm starting right now. That's a good thing," he explained. "As much as I miss playing here, you definitely can't beat starting in the NFL."
